Langalanga Scholarship Fund

In 2001 the club entered into a four year commitment with the Langalanga Scholarship Fund to sponsor a student through secondary education in Kenya. The students are carefully selected by the Trustees of the Fund who have exacting criteria. Students must be from families who would otherwise be unable to afford fees to further their children's education and have proved to be hard working achieving good results at the end of their primary education.

Our sponsored student Solomon Muriithi Nderu was financially helped by our club through the four years of secondary education at Koelel High School and was successful in achieving the required grades in his KSCE examinations to enable him to gain entrance to Strathmore University to commence a three year accountancy course. The club decided that having invested four years helping to fund Solomon's education we should try to see him through the three years at university. We cover just over two thirds of his yearly educational costs by donating £700 annually to support the Fund.

Solomon is doing well at university and regularly keeps us in touch with how things are progressing with his educational studies as can be seen from the latest letter from him to the club correspondent which is published below.

Dear Andover Rotary Club ,

It’s with great pleasure that I write this email to inform you about my progress.

I am doing fine with my studies as I eagerly wait for my results for June sitting.

Once again, I cannot forget to thank you for all your wholehearted support towards my tertiary education. I am proud and indeed, short of words to express my gratitude.

I have been working hard in all aspects of life to be among the best and to secure a bright future. The Andover Rotary Club, working tirelessly hand in hand with the LLSF has been up to see me succeed and have given me all the support. This again is incredible and immeasurable.

Col. & Mrs. VC were just about to leave Kenya when I shared my good news with them.

I would not have made my final decision without their advice.

I am delighted to inform you that I have secured a place with UAP Co. Ltd, a Kenyan Insurance company, of which I had an internship with, early in the year. It is certain that the company’s management found my work appealing to them.

The company has proposed to meet my college fees as from January 2010 (i.e. next semester), as this semester’s fee has been cleared by LLSF. I was not sure whether to take or turn down the offer since LLSF is still meeting my expenses.

However, I found it advisable for me to take the offer and give my opportunity in the LLSF to any other needy Kenyan. This is because I would be in a position to meet my expenses after getting employed.

I, therefore, wrote to Col. & Mrs. VC on 24th July and we later had a phone conversation on Saturday, 25th of July. Col. VC liked my idea and was more than happy for me.

Andover Rotary Club and LLSF will still remain my best friends and I will keep in touch regularly.

You have taught me a lot of kindness; I will never forget how far you have brought me. May the Almighty God bless you abundantly and always be with you.

I look forward to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Solomon Muriithi Nderu
