Rotary Club of Andover

Hampshire, United Kingdom

District 1110, Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland

Major Success Stories

The club has had some major success in recent years in terms of International Service in encouraging schools and other organisations locally to donate money and humanitarian items of aid for the provision of Aquaboxes. This is a system of water filtration which will cater for a family of four for three months. These boxes are stored elsewhere in the UK and then dispatched worldwide to provide clean drinking water filtration and emergency items to the victims of disasters. These go to people who have been left with absolutely nothing and to whom even a cup of clean drinking water could be the difference between life and death.

Likewise the public by their generous support have enabled the Club to support the Shelterbox charity which again provides emergency aid for victims of disasters worldwide but this time by the provision of tents sleeping bags cooking utensils with small cooker and other basic survival equipment in addition to basic water purification equipment to cater for up to ten people.

Both the above charities are Rotary “in house” charities so administration costs are at the absolute minimum as the majority of the work is done by volunteers. This means that virtually all money donated actually goes to help the disaster victims. It is reassuring that Rotary organised aid has gained access to ALL countries affected recently and was one of the first outside agencies to be admitted to Burma when others were excluded. This speaks volumes for the high regard in which the Rotary movement and the volunteer distribution personnel are held throughout the world.

VSO

The club continues to support and sponsor a volunteer under the Voluntary Service Overseas Scheme. Currently we have a volunteer Angela Reading working in Georgetown in Guyana setting up training for refractionists to be able to detect some of the eye diseases and disorders prevalent locally. For the last two years we supported a volunteer who was setting up training schemes for best practice teaching to teachers and administrators in a district in Cambodia and who has now returned to the UK.

Lanalanga Scholarship Fund

Through this fund we continue to support the higher education of a young Kenyan scholar having funded him through his secondary and further educational schooling.

Twinning

We are twinned with the Rotary Club of Hardenberg in Holland and very much enjoy contact and reciprocal visits between members on a bi-annual basis.

We also keep in touch with the Lawrence and Andover Clubs in USA.
