Inauguration 1949

Rotary Club of Andover

Hampshire, United Kingdom

Where it all began:

On 23 November 1949, the first President of the Rotary Club of Andover, Harold Guard, received the Club's Charter and his badge of office from the then Chairman of District 11, Rotarian Bill Read, at a dinner held at the Territorial Army Centre in East Street, Andover.

Visitors came from all over Hampshire, including members from the Rotary Club of Salisbury, who had been instrumental in establishing the new Rotary Club in Andover.

Those present enjoyed an excellent Roast Pheasant dinner, by candlelight - not through any sense of romanticism, but because a power failure put out all the lights!
